In the Raleigh neighborhood of Memphis on July 10, 2022, a young man's life was cut short in what was described as a tragic accident between friends. Shamon Lancaster, an 18-year-old male, was fatally shot inside his own home. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses reported seeing two males running from the residence. The initial moments were filled with confusion and panic as friends of Lancaster attempted to render aid until paramedics arrived, but their efforts were ultimately
in vain.
The investigation into Lancaster's death quickly focused on an individual identified as Rico Brown. According to police reports and witness statements, one of the males seen fleeing the scene informed others that Brown had accidentally shot Lancaster. Upon being detained by the Memphis Police Department, Brown admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He recounted a harrowing story of how he and his friend, Lancaster, were playing with their firearms and pointing them at one another.
Brown claimed that in what he believed to be a harmless act, he removed the magazine from his gun, aimed it at Lancaster, and pulled the trigger. He stated that he was under the impression that the weapon was unloaded. The single gunshot that rang out, however, proved to be fatal. Brown told investigators that he panicked after the gun discharged and immediately fled the scene. As a result of the investigation and his own admission, Rico Brown was taken into custody and charged with reckless homicide in connection with the death of Shamon Lancaster.
