On a Friday night in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the life of 43-year-old Rafael Mendoza-Pineda was tragically cut short. On August 26, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., shots rang out at the Davis Estates Apartments on Anthony Lane. Responding officers from the Shelbyville Police Department discovered Mendoza-Pineda in a foyer of the apartment complex where he resided.
He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and head from a handgun and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the apartment complex reported seeing two men fleeing the area on foot immediately after the gunshots were heard. One of the individuals was described as a white male who had his face partially concealed with what appeared to be a handkerchief. This initiated a homicide investigation led by the Shelbyville Police Department, which would soon involve multiple law enforcement agencies in the search for those responsible for Mendoza-Pineda's death.
After a little over a month of investigation, a suspect was identified and apprehended. On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, detectives from the Shelbyville Police Department, with assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Metro Nashville Police Department, and the U.S. Marshal Service, arrested Mohamed Miray in Nashville. Miray was charged with criminal homicide in connection with the shooting death of Rafael Mendoza-Pineda. He was subsequently booked into the Bedford County Jail and held without bond. The investigation continued to determine the motive behind the fatal shooting and to identify the second individual who was seen fleeing the scene.
