In the late summer of 2022, the life of 18-year-old Omaron Starks was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in East Nashville. On the night of August 25th, Starks was discovered in the driver's seat of a car parked at an apartment complex on Porter Road, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation into the young man's death pointed towards robbery as the likely motive.
For months, the case remained under active investigation by homicide detectives. A significant breakthrough occurred in February 2023 when two teenagers, 16-year-old Zander Porter and 17-year-old Jadiyah Stafford, were charged with the murder of Omaron Starks. At the time the charges were brought forward, both Porter and Stafford were already incarcerated. They had been previously arrested in connection with the armed carjacking of a 22-year-old woman at a gas station on Dickerson Pike, which had occurred just nine days before Starks was killed. The charges against the two teens brought a measure of progress in a case that had left a community searching for answers.
