In the small mining town of Luxor, Pennsylvania, a dedicated law enforcement officer met a tragic and violent end. Constable Harry Foster 'Darby' Bierer, a 42-year-old male, was shot and killed on Thursday, July 9, 1903, while in the line of duty. He had been dispatched to the Jamison No. 1 mine to serve a warrant on a man suspected of dynamiting a building on the premises.
Constable Bierer proceeded to the suspect's residence at the mine to execute the arrest.
It was there, in a sudden and brutal confrontation, that the suspect opened fire with a. 38 caliber handgun, fatally wounding the constable. The gunman was apprehended by authorities a short time later, bringing a swift, albeit somber, resolution to the immediate manhunt.
Following his arrest, the suspect made a series of shocking confessions while incarcerated. He admitted to the murders of a staggering 18 individuals, a revelation that painted a picture of a far more sinister criminal than initially believed. Among his confessed victims were Patrolmen Timothy T. Devine and Charles Pennell of the Chicago Police Department, who had been killed on August 12, 1902. The man was subsequently convicted for the murder of Constable Bierer. In a final act of justice for the slain constable and his many other victims, the perpetrator was executed by hanging on February 11, 1904. Constable Bierer was survived by his wife.
