On April 21, 1993, Richard Pepe, a 36-year-old male of unspecified ethnicity, was tragically murdered at the Pennant Sports Bar in Ridley Township, PA. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM when Teryl Wyrick, armed with a .38 caliber revolver, entered the bar. Wyrick was reportedly upset that his ex-girlfriend, Hope Popoleo, was dating another man. Believing Pepe to be Hope's new partner, Wyrick shot him in the neck at close range.
Pepe was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Wyrick turned his weapon on Hope Popoleo, who was 26 years old. He shot her in the shoulder and then fired two more rounds, one of which struck bystanders Anthony Casterioto and Jeffrey Baker. Wyrick then fled the scene, but was apprehended by police less than an hour after Pepe's death. He was charged with murder, assault, and weapons offenses.
During the trial in April 1994, Wyrick claimed he had no memory of the incident due to an alcoholic blackout induced by beer and tequila. However, Hope's mother testified that Hope and Wyrick had never actually dated, and that Pepe was just a friend. The jury found Wyrick guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. Although the jury deadlocked on the death penalty, Judge Charles Keeler sentenced Wyrick to two consecutive life terms plus 10 to 20 years in prison.
