On January 30, 2002, Dennis Joseph McNamara, a 43-year-old male police officer of Irish-American ethnicity, was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Officer McNamara, who was a veteran of the Upper Darby Township Police Department and a U.S. Army Reserve sergeant, was fatally shot in the head by a handgun by a member of a motorcycle gang.
The suspect, identified as Thomas James Campbell, fled the scene but was later arrested following a car chase in Bucks County.
Campbell, who was 52 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to Officer McNamara's murder and was sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison on July 8, 2015. The tragic incident marked Officer McNamara as the first township officer killed in the line of duty, leaving behind a wife and two children.
