On March 31, 2004, Christopher Michael Burgert, a 30-year-old male deputy sheriff with the Bradford County Sheriff's Office in Towanda, Pennsylvania, was tragically shot and killed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant. Deputy Burgert, along with his colleague Deputy Michael Van Kuren, responded to a private residence in Wells Township to apprehend a man who had failed to appear in court for a minor charge. Upon their arrival, both deputies were shot by the suspect, Dustin Briggs.
