On a Monday afternoon in Philadelphia, Odies Franklin Bosket Jr., a 36-year-old African American man, was on his way to do something he did every day: pick up his young daughter from her nursery school. It was March 7, 2005, and Bosket, a dedicated clerk for the city's Revenue Department and a father of four, made his way to a subway station in the Logan neighborhood, a familiar part of his daily routine.
