Javonne Chappell, a 17-year-old male, was a student at Chester High School with a passion for basketball. On the evening of May 21, 2010, while talking on his cellphone on a sidewalk in the 1200 block of Pine Lane in Chester, Pennsylvania, he was tragically shot and killed. The incident marked another life cut short by violence in the city.
The investigation into Chappell's death led to the identification of three suspects.
An intense search for those responsible was launched, culminating in the apprehension of the individuals believed to be involved in the seemingly random act of violence. The three men charged in connection with the murder were Shyheed Hinton, Jamir King, and Brian Potts.
In the ensuing legal process, the three suspects faced charges for their roles in the death of the Chester teen. Rather than proceeding to a full trial, Hinton, King, and Potts all opted to plead guilty to third-degree murder. As a result of their pleas, each man was sentenced to a term of 20 to 40 years in state prison.
