In a tragic turn of events at a teenager's birthday party in Chester, Pennsylvania, 17-year-old David De'Sheon Johnson Jr. was fatally shot. The male victim died on April 9, 2011, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center following the violent incident.
The shooting erupted at the Minaret Temple where the party was being held, resulting in the death of Johnson and another individual, with seven others sustaining injuries.
The night of celebration descended into chaos, leaving a community in mourning.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a 16-year-old, Kenai Avery, was apprehended by a security guard as he was leaving the party with a handgun. Avery provided conflicting statements to the Chester police regarding the weapon. Initially, he claimed to have found the gun on the floor after shots were fired and was running outside when he was stopped. He later altered his account, stating a security guard had placed the firearm in his hand before he was apprehended. Investigators discovered three photos of a similar weapon on Avery's cell phone.
A second firearm, which had been fired that night, was discovered inside the hall near where Johnson and the other victim, Robel Laboy, were shot. Following an investigation, Kenai Avery was charged as an adult with two counts of murder for his alleged involvement in the deadly shootings.
