John David Dryer, a 46-year-old male, was a dedicated police officer with the East Washington Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania. On December 18, 2011, Officer Dryer was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 near East Beau Street in East Washington. He and another officer had pulled over a vehicle when the suspect exited his car and opened fire, striking Officer Dryer in the head.
Despite being rushed to Washington Hospital, he was pronounced dead at around 1:00 am the following morning.
The suspect fled the scene but later barricaded himself in his home in Webster, Pennsylvania. After several hours, the suspect exited his home and was shot and killed by police officers after opening fire on them. The incident was a tragic end to Officer Dryer's career, who had served as a part-time officer with the East Washington Borough Police Department for 16 months and had a total of 16 years of service in various law enforcement roles.
Officer Dryer was also known for his work as a veterinarian, having earned a Doctor of Veterinary Science Degree from The Ohio State University and owning Chestnut Veterinary Clinic in Washington. His dedication to both law enforcement and animal care made him a well-respected figure in the community. He is survived by his son and parents, who continue to honor his memory.
The investigation into Officer Dryer's death concluded with the suspect's death, and no further arrests or litigation followed. The community and law enforcement agencies mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
