In the early evening of Sunday, January 27, 2013, a promising life was tragically cut short on the streets of Philadelphia. Richard 'Rich' Flemming, a 25-year-old male and a former forward for the Fairfield University men's basketball team, was shot multiple times in the chest, back, and thigh at approximately 5:51 p.m. in the 600th block of East Ontario Street.
The violent encounter sent shockwaves through the community and left friends and family to mourn the loss of a young man who once had a bright future on the basketball court.
Emergency services rushed Flemming to Temple University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m., less than thirty minutes after the shooting occurred. The sudden and brutal nature of his death left many unanswered questions and a palpable sense of loss among those who knew him from his time as a collegiate athlete.
The Philadelphia Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the swift identification and arrest of a suspect, 28-year-old Vihn Ly. Authorities reported that some form of confrontation between Flemming and Ly preceded the fatal gunshots. Following his arrest, Ly was charged with murder and other related offenses in connection with Flemming's death, bringing a small measure of closure to a case that ended a young man's life far too soon.
