Jahkil Q. Swain, an 18-year-old male from Chester, Pennsylvania, tragically lost his life on April 11, 2014. Jahkil was fatally shot outside the Crosby Square Apartments in Chester. He was sitting in the passenger seat of his mother's car when Breon Lawrence, a former friend, approached the vehicle and fired a single shot through the window, striking Jahkil in the heart.
Jahkil was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Crozer Chester Medical Center.
The investigation into Jahkil's death led to the arrest of Breon Lawrence. Lawrence was found to possess a .357 Taurus handgun, which was matched to the bullet jacket fragment recovered from the scene. In August 2015, Lawrence was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the homicide. The court also added an additional 6 to 12 years imprisonment for related charges, including recklessly endangering another person and possessing an instrument of crime.
Jahkil's family, including his parents Lenora Rodriquez and Jeremiah Lawrence, his brother Jazmar Bell, and his grandparents, have faced immense grief and hardship since his passing. Lenora Rodriquez, Jahkil's mother, expressed her pain and difficulty in coping with the loss, while his grandmother Debbie Dowling has struggled with sleepless nights and a life turned upside down. Despite the tragedy, Lenora Rodriquez has publicly forgiven Lawrence and pleaded with him to seek forgiveness from God.
The case has been a significant one for the Chester community, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence and the importance of seeking justice for victims and their families. Jahkil's death serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the need for continued efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.
