Frankie Trammell, a 24-year-old man from Pittsburgh, PA, was tragically shot and killed on June 3, 2014, in the Bedford Dwellings housing community on Chauncey Drive in Pittsburgh's Hill District. The incident was part of a year that saw a high number of homicides in Allegheny County, with 105 murders reported in 2014, 88 of which involved Black victims.
The investigation into Trammell's death led to the arrest and conviction of two individuals: Keith Watson and Maurice Palmer.
Keith Watson was convicted of first-degree murder and a firearms violation, while Maurice Palmer was found guilty of third-degree murder. Both men were found not guilty of conspiracy. The case was notable as it was the first homicide to go to trial from Allegheny County's indicting grand jury process, which allows charges to be secured by witness testimony in closed hearings rather than by public testimony in a preliminary hearing.
The convictions of Watson and Palmer brought some measure of justice for Trammell's family and the community, but the case also highlighted the ongoing issue of violence in the Hill District and the broader Pittsburgh area.
