Harrison Shaffer, a 68-year-old man from Bunola, PA, tragically died on May 20, 2015. He was born on January 12, 1946, in Philippi, West Virginia. Harrison was known for his kind and helpful nature, and he was an active member of the Bunola Nazarene Church. He retired after 36 years of employment from Metal Management in Elizabeth and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
On the day of his death, Harrison's nephew, Billy Joe Richter, broke into his home in an attempt to steal
guns. Harrison called 911 and informed the dispatcher about the break-in. During the incident, Richter fired multiple shots at Harrison, striking him in the stomach and head. When police arrived, Richter exchanged gunfire with them, endangering several officers. After a lengthy standoff, the SWAT team was able to arrest Richter by using tear gas to force him out of the house.
Billy Joe Richter was charged with criminal homicide, burglary, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and criminal mischief. He was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The tragic incident left the community in shock, and Harrison Shaffer was remembered fondly by those who knew him.
