In the early hours of a Saturday in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, a quiet residential street became the scene of a fatal shooting. Harry Robert Ondriezek Jr., a 43-year-old male, was in his Chestnut Street home when Paul Brian Hoover, also 43, entered just before 1:30 a.m. on August 22, 2015, and shot him in the head.
Another person present in Ondriezek's home at the time of the shooting fled to a neighbor's house to call 911.
After the shooting, Hoover, a corrections officer, returned to his own home about a half-mile away. When police arrived at his residence shortly after 2 a.m., Hoover was standing in his front yard and shot himself in the head.
Authorities recovered two different caliber guns from Hoover's possession. While an official motive was not immediately released by law enforcement, family members of Paul Hoover suggested that animosity over his estranged wife may have been a contributing factor. According to Hoover's father, his son's divorce was nearing its finalization. He claimed his son's estranged wife would tell Hoover she was happier with Ondriezek, which may have been an attempt to upset him.
Neighbors of Ondriezek described him as well-liked, and the violent event shocked the small town. The incident was ruled a murder-suicide, with no further arrests made.
