On the night of December 29, 2015, a 22-year-old male from Glassport, Pennsylvania, named Isaac Cole, was fatally shot in Clairton. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Maple Alley near a gas station. Cole was with his mother, girlfriend, and younger brother at the time. They had stopped their car to check on a noise when the shooting began.
Following the shooting, Cole was rushed to Jefferson Hospital by his family and friends, but he succumbed to
multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 11:18 p.m. Witnesses at the scene, including his own family, identified the shooter as 21-year-old John Sanders of Clairton, also known as 'Little John.' Cole himself, before he died, told those in the car with him that 'Little John' had shot him.
Authorities promptly arrested John Sanders, charging him with criminal homicide, a firearms violation, and tampering with evidence. The motive for the shooting was initially described by police as an unspecified ongoing dispute between the two men. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station showed Sanders riding a minibike in the area shortly before the shooting. Further investigation found particles consistent with gunshot residue on Sanders' hand and on a sweatshirt he was allegedly wearing.
During the trial, the prosecution presented the testimony of Cole's family members who witnessed the shooting. However, the defense offered an alternative narrative, contending that a bitter family feud over a missing Mercedes-Benz, not a dispute with Sanders, was the real reason for Cole's death. The defense attorney highlighted inconsistencies in the witnesses' initial descriptions of the shooter and argued that there was no clear motive for Sanders to have committed the crime. After a trial in October 2016, an Allegheny County jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding John Sanders not guilty of the murder of Isaac Cole.
