Justin Simmons, a 25-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Aliquippa, PA, tragically lost his life on October 7, 2016, in Beaver Falls, PA. Simmons was fatally shot in the Morado Dwellings housing complex. The incident occurred when police responded to a report of shots fired and found Simmons unresponsive in the street.
The investigation led to the arrest of Tyrone Dyvon Savage Jr., a 24-year-old resident of Beaver Falls. Surveillance video footage placed Savage at the scene, fleeing shortly after the shooting. The footage also showed Savage disposing of the murder weapon in a nearby cooling pond. A witness identified Savage as the shooter, and the murder weapon, along with its ammunition, was found and linked to the crime scene.
Savage was charged with first-degree murder and receiving stolen property. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence, including the surveillance video and witness testimonies, to establish Savage's guilt. Despite Savage's defense arguing insufficient evidence and lack of motive, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. In November 2017, Savage was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The emotional sentencing hearing included impact statements from Simmons' family, who described the profound loss and heartbreak they experienced. Steven Simmons, the victim's father, expressed how his son's death had impacted every family member, leading them to move out of Aliquippa due to the painful memories. Yolanda Hunter, the victim's sister, and Evie Simmons-Cary, the victim's grandmother, also shared their grief and prayers for Savage to find redemption in prison.
The case highlighted the devastating consequences of violent crime on families and communities, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.
