In the summer of 2017, the life of 23-year-old Samantha Mae Klavora was tragically cut short in a burst of violence on a Sunday night in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania. On July 16th, Samantha was with a male companion on the steps of a bar in the 1000 block of Fifth Avenue when they were approached by a man. The man, later identified as Daniel Bizzelle, allegedly harbored a belief that Samantha's companion was responsible for the murder of another man a month prior.
What began as a
conversation quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. Bizzelle is said to have pulled out a handgun and opened fire. His intended target, the 38-year-old man with Samantha, was struck by the gunfire but managed to flee. In the chaos, Samantha was shot multiple times. The vibrant young woman, who had dreams of pursuing a career in cosmetology or working with animals, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy would later reveal she had been shot six times in her torso and lower body.
In the days following the shooting, Allegheny County Police identified 25-year-old Daniel “Boog” Bizzelle as the suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was charged with homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. In early August, Bizzelle surrendered to the authorities. Despite his surrender, he maintained his innocence in the shooting.
The case against Daniel Bizzelle went to a nonjury trial in July 2019. The prosecution's case relied heavily on the testimony of the surviving victim. However, the judge found the witness's testimony to be inconsistent and lacking corroboration from other evidence such as forensics or surveillance footage. Citing a lack of sufficient evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, the judge acquitted Bizzelle of all charges in the death of Samantha Klavora. The judge expressed sympathy for Samantha's family, calling her death a “senseless and tragic killing,” but ultimately ruled that the prosecution had not met its burden of proof.
