On July 22, 2017, 23-year-old Teshon Malloy, a male of African American ethnicity from Chester, PA, was tragically shot and killed. Malloy was found lying in the street at the intersection of Thomas and Terrill streets, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. According to the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s office, Malloy had been shot twice in the head, four times in the torso, once in each arm, and once in the leg.
The investigation into Malloy's death led to the arrest of 19-year-old Miguel Angel Moreno, also of Chester, PA. Witnesses reported that Malloy had been trying to break up a fight when he was shot by Moreno, who was known by the alias "Yay-Yay". Moreno was identified as the gunman by a witness and was arrested within 24 hours of the shooting. He was taken into custody after voluntarily coming to Chester Police Headquarters with his mother and aunt.
Moreno eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and firearms not be carried without a license. He was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 33 years in state prison. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chester, which had already seen a significant number of homicides that year.
The tragic death of Teshon Malloy and the subsequent legal proceedings against Miguel Angel Moreno underscore the devastating impact of gun violence on individuals and communities. The efforts of law enforcement and the cooperation of witnesses were crucial in bringing Moreno to justice and providing some measure of closure for Malloy's family and friends.
