In the evening hours of Tuesday, February 20, 2018, the sound of gunshots pierced the air in the 4500 block of Holden Street in Philadelphia. Responding Philadelphia Police officers discovered 50-year-old James Wimberly, a Black male, lying in the grass on the grounds of an apartment complex. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The officers rushed Wimberly to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he did not survive. Wimberly was a resident of the 5400 block of Whitby Street in Philadelphia. Known as 'Wimb' to his friends, he was a celebrated and skillful basketball player at the Lee Cultural Center and Playground in his younger years.
As of now, the case of James Wimberly's murder remains open. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate the homicide, but no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
