On a summer morning in 2018, the life of 23-year-old Jarod Jamon Ashburn was cut short in a fatal shooting in North Union Township, Pennsylvania. The incident, which took place just after 11 a.m. on July 26, 2018, occurred outside an apartment building at Woodview Terrace. Ashburn was discovered on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest and was rushed to Uniontown Hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead. Friends and neighbors remembered Ashburn as a 'cool guy' who was working to improve his life.
The investigation into Ashburn's death quickly led to a suspect, 22-year-old Toney Robert Jones of Uniontown. Authorities were aided by video surveillance and witness accounts, which pointed to Jones as the perpetrator. He was located in a nearby apartment and taken into custody without incident on the same day as the shooting. State police described Ashburn's death as a homicide.
The motive for the shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument over a shattered car window. During the trial in November 2019, prosecutors presented surveillance footage that captured the fatal encounter. The video showed Jones going into an apartment and returning with a handgun. After an initial misfire, Jones fired a shot that struck Ashburn in the chest, piercing his lungs and heart.
