On what was supposed to be a day of celebration, his 52nd birthday on September 3, 2018, John Amrein, a male resident of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, left his home and was never seen alive by his family again. His failure to return home or show up for his job at FedEx prompted an investigation that unraveled a story of a love triangle, deceit, and violence. Amrein, 52, had reportedly been having an affair with a co-worker, 20-year-old Andrea Martel.
On that Labor Day, he went to her trailer in Great Bend Township.
The situation escalated when Martel informed Amrein that she was pregnant and he might be the father. An argument broke out between the two. At some point, Martel contacted 22-year-old Quentin Millard for assistance. A violent confrontation ensued between Amrein and Millard, during which both men sustained gunshot wounds. The fight continued, and Amrein was struck in the head with an object, leading to his death.
Following the deadly altercation, Martel and Millard took steps to conceal the crime. They wrapped Amrein's body in garbage bags and, the following day, drove it to a remote, wooded area off Highlands Road in New Milford. There, they began to dig a shallow grave to bury him. Martel claimed she left before Millard finished burying the body. After Amrein was reported missing, Pennsylvania State Police launched an investigation, which quickly led them to Martel and Millard. Martel was taken into custody, while Millard fled, prompting a manhunt. He was apprehended near his home on September 5, 2018.
Both Andrea Martel and Quentin Millard were charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse. In the course of the legal proceedings, a startling revelation came to light: Martel had reportedly never been pregnant. Millard's defense attorney argued that Martel had manipulated both men and orchestrated the confrontation. In January 2020, to avoid a trial and a potential life sentence, Quentin Millard pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. Andrea Martel had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit third-degree murder. Both were sentenced to serve 20 to 40 years in state prison for their roles in the death of John Amrein.
