In the late summer of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Khalil Andrew Logan, an African American male, was cut tragically short in a violent encounter within an abandoned building in Wilkinsburg, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On the evening of September 10th, first responders were dispatched to a report of a shooting and discovered Logan with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends remembered him as a student at Westinghouse Academy, where he played on the football team and was eagerly anticipating the birth of his daughter, for whom he had already chosen a name.
The investigation into Logan's death quickly focused on an acquaintance, 18-year-old Dashere Davenport. Police who were already patrolling the area due to a recent spike in shootings saw a man, later identified as Davenport, leaving the abandoned structure just before the 911 call came in. He was stopped by police a short distance from the scene. During questioning, Davenport admitted to shooting Logan, claiming it was an act of self-defense. He alleged that he believed Logan was reaching for a gun, prompting him to draw his own weapon and fire multiple times before fleeing and discarding the firearm. However, investigators found no evidence to suggest that Logan had been armed.
Following his arrest, Dashere Davenport was charged with homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, and tampering with evidence. The case, however, took a significant turn in the courts. In March 2020, a judge ruled that police lacked probable cause to arrest Davenport in the first place. This decision led to the suppression of the evidence that investigators had obtained from him following his apprehension. Consequently, the Allegheny County District Attorney's office withdrew the homicide charges against Davenport. Despite this legal setback for the prosecution, authorities have stated that the investigation into the death of Khalil Andrew Logan remains open and active.
