In the late hours of a Friday night in Chester, Pennsylvania, the life of 18-year-old Ramaj Burton was tragically cut short. On July 19, 2019, gunshots rang out at the intersection of Rose and Spruce Streets, leaving two young men wounded. Ramaj, a Black male who had recently graduated from Chester Stem Academy, was struck multiple times in the chest.
In the immediate aftermath, he was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in a private vehicle but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The violence of that night also left a 17-year-old seriously injured. When police arrived at the chaotic scene, they discovered the younger teenager lying in the street with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and hips. He was transported to the same medical center for treatment. At the time, authorities indicated that the two shootings were related. Ramaj was remembered in his obituary as a respectful and humble young man who was a pleasure to be around and had a knack for making people laugh. He was employed at a McDonald's in Boothwyn and was known for his love of fashion.
The shooting marked the ninth homicide in the city of Chester that year. In the days following the incident, police urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Ramaj's death and the wounding of the other teen. Despite these pleas for assistance from the community, no arrests were immediately reported in connection with the double shooting.
As time passed, the investigation into the death of Ramaj Burton remained ongoing. Years after the fatal shooting, his case continues to be listed as an unsolved homicide. There have been no public announcements regarding any suspects or arrests in the case, leaving a community and a grieving family still searching for answers and justice for the young life that was lost.
