In the early hours of a Monday morning in Philadelphia, a dispute that began in a bar tragically escalated, ending the life of 25-year-old Zaire Williams. The former Temple University football player was fatally shot on March 2, 2020, on the 1800 block of West Montgomery Avenue, not far from the campus where he once played.
The preceding confrontation started at the Johnny Walker Bar and later moved to the street, where a fistfight broke out.
Williams reportedly won the physical altercation, after which the other man involved allegedly shot him in the head. Williams was transported to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. A gun was recovered at the scene.
A few days later, on March 9, 2020, police arrested 22-year-old Anthony Nieves in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, and other related offenses.
Williams was a talented running back at Timber Creek High School in Sicklerville, New Jersey, before playing for Temple University from 2013 to 2015. He later transferred to the University of Maine. His death was mourned by former teammates and coaches, who remembered him as an upbeat and positive person. A candlelight vigil was held at his former high school to honor his memory.
