On a summer evening in Chester, Pennsylvania, a young man's life was tragically cut short in an alley. Michael Robert McCracken, a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed on August 4, 2020. The events that led to his death began with a planned firearm transaction.
McCracken had given a ride to his cousin, who intended to purchase a firearm from a man named Jaahir Davonne Johns. They were accompanied by a female friend. When they met with Johns, they were directed to get into the backseat of an SUV where another man, identified as Bradley, was seated in the front passenger seat with a gun on his lap. Johns then drove the vehicle into an alley between Lloyd and Pennell Streets.
Suddenly, Johns stopped the car, pulled out a gun, and pointed it at McCracken's cousin. Reacting to the immediate danger, McCracken opened the rear passenger door and attempted to flee. As he ran, Johns fired multiple shots, striking McCracken in the back.
Following the shooting, Johns and Bradley drove further down the alley. Bradley then pointed his gun at McCracken's cousin, robbing him of approximately two thousand dollars. Meanwhile, McCracken's cousin and their friend attempted to help McCracken and called 911. When police and emergency services arrived at approximately 6:00 p.m., they found McCracken suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he later died. An autopsy revealed that four bullets had entered McCracken's back.
In February 2021, a warrant was issued for Bradley's arrest. Eventually, both Jaahir Davonne Johns and his co-defendant Bradley were arrested and stood trial jointly from January 9 through January 17, 2023. The jury found Johns guilty of first-degree murder, and in April 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Bradley was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the robbery that led to McCracken's death.
