In the quiet suburb of Upper St. Clair, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the life of Niki Alen Happel, a 54-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was brought to a tragic and violent end on August 24, 2020. The events of that day unfolded in what should have been the familiar comfort of her own home, but had instead become the backdrop for a devastating domestic incident.
Niki and her 67-year-old husband, John Happel, were recently estranged.
In the midst of this separation, Niki had returned to their shared residence on Thousand Oaks Drive. Her intention was simply to gather some of her personal belongings, a task that many face during the dissolution of a relationship. However, this ordinary act would have a fatal conclusion.
On that Monday morning, at approximately 10:10 a.m., Allegheny County police received a chilling phone call. The caller was John Happel, and his message was stark and horrifying: he had just killed his wife and was going to kill himself. This call prompted an immediate and significant police response, including the dispatch of a SWAT team to the scene.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement officials surrounded the home. Despite the tense situation, they reported hearing no gunfire, leading them to believe the tragic events had already transpired before their arrival. When the SWAT team eventually made entry into the house, they discovered the bodies of both Niki and John Happel. It was determined that John had shot and killed Niki before taking his own life. The incident was swiftly classified by the Upper St. Clair police chief as a 'domestic-related homicide.' As the perpetrator died at the scene, there were no arrests to be made, and the case was concluded as a murder-suicide.
