On a September evening in Philadelphia, the sounds of a basketball game at Roberto Clemente Park were tragically silenced by a barrage of gunfire. It was September 16, 2020, when 21-year-old Khalid Henderson was shot and killed while playing basketball, a game he loved, in the Spring Garden neighborhood. The park, a place where he had played since he was a child, became a scene of violence that would forever alter the lives of his family and friends.
Henderson, an aspiring photographer who was set to begin classes at the Community College of Philadelphia, was remembered by his family as a kind and generous person who was always willing to help others.
The attack was sudden and brutal. According to police, three gunmen entered the playground and opened fire, specifically targeting Henderson. They chased him around the playground, shooting him multiple times in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The hail of bullets, with at least 55 shots fired, also struck four other people. Another young man, 18-year-old Jayden Lucas, was also killed in the mass shooting. Three other teenagers were wounded but survived.
In the wake of the shooting, Henderson's family was left to grapple with an unimaginable loss. His grandmother recalled his loving nature and his signature greeting of a wet kiss on the cheek. Dozens gathered for a balloon release to honor his memory, releasing green and white balloons, his favorite colors. The community was left in shock and fear, as a neighborhood playground was transformed into a place of tragedy.
Despite the public nature of the crime, with more than 15 people in the park at the time of the shooting, the gunmen have not been brought to justice. Although police detained a man seen running from the scene with a gun in his car shortly after the incident, they later stated they were still searching for the three gunmen captured on surveillance video. As of May 2023, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Khalid Henderson and Jayden Lucas. A reward of up to $20,000 is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
