On October 8, 2020, 20-year-old Saheed Gayle, an African American male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Gayle, who worked as a salesperson at a shoe cleaning kiosk in the mall, was involved in a verbal altercation with Lawrence Mark Murphy, 21, and a woman. The argument escalated, and Murphy shot Gayle in the parking lot just outside an entrance to the mall.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m., and Gayle was pronounced dead at the hospital from a gunshot wound to the chest. The incident was ruled a homicide, and Murphy was identified as the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for Murphy on October 12, 2020, charging him with criminal homicide and weapons violations. Murphy turned himself in nine days after the shooting and was later charged with third-degree murder and a firearms charge.
In August 2022, Murphy pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and received a 15- to 30-year state prison sentence as part of a plea agreement with Allegheny County prosecutors. During the court proceedings, Gayle's twin brother attempted to attack Murphy, but was restrained by sheriff's deputies and police officers.

Gayle was remembered as a selfless, loving individual who had moved to Pittsburgh from Maryland to pursue his education and independence.
