The 52-year-old woman was fatally shot on the evening of January 20, 2021, while sitting in her parked SUV in front of her home on the 900 block of Hartel Avenue. The engine of her vehicle was still running when her body was discovered, slumped in the driver's seat.
A vehicle had pulled up beside hers, and the driver reached out and fired at least eight shots, striking her multiple times, including in the head. Gladys Coriano was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries hours later.
The investigation swiftly led to a suspect who was hauntingly familiar to Gladys. Her ex-husband, 55-year-old Adriano Coriano, was arrested and charged with her murder and other related offenses. The act of violence was not a sudden outburst but the final, devastating chapter in a history of abuse and terror that Gladys had endured. In the months leading up to her death, she had taken numerous steps to protect herself, including obtaining a Protection From Abuse order, installing security cameras, and changing her phone number. She had reported her ex-husband's threatening behavior to the police on at least five separate occasions in the three months before she was killed.
Despite her persistent efforts to seek help from the justice system, Adriano Coriano remained a threat. In a chilling turn of events, just ten days before the fatal shooting, he had pleaded guilty to violating the protective order and was sentenced to only six months of probation. At the time of the murder, there was an active felony warrant for his arrest stemming from an incident on Halloween where he allegedly forced his way into her home, assaulted her, and threatened her with a knife. The system that was meant to protect her had failed, leaving her family to grapple with the devastating consequences and the belief that her death could have been prevented had her pleas been taken more seriously.
