In the early hours of September 30, 2021, the life of 33-year-old Troy Berry, a Black male from Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded around 12:15 a.m. on the 1900 block of Hunting Park Avenue in the Nicetown section of the city. Responding to the sound of gunshots, Philadelphia Police officers discovered Berry at the scene, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Alongside Berry, a 37-year-old man was also found with a gunshot
wound to his wrist. Both men were rushed to Temple University Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Troy Berry succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead that morning. The second victim was treated for his non-life-threatening injury.
Following the shooting, investigators began to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Surveillance footage released to the public showed two men who were wanted in connection with the deadly shooting. According to authorities, the gunmen shot Berry multiple times at point-blank range. The suspects were seen arriving in two separate vehicles; one in a dark-colored minivan, driven by a man considered a person of interest, and the other in a dark-colored sedan. The city, in an effort to bring the perpetrators to justice, offered a $20,000 reward for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the case.
The investigation into Troy Berry's death was persistent, and on May 16, 2022, a significant breakthrough was made. A suspect was apprehended in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, in connection with the murder. The Philadelphia Police Department has since marked the case as 'SOLVED'. At the time of the arrest, it was indicated that the case outcome was pending trial.
