On March 24, 2022, Sean Toomey, a 15-year-old boy from Philadelphia, PA, was tragically shot in the head while carrying water from his car to his home on the 6200 block of Mulberry Street in Northeast Philadelphia. Sean was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital in extremely critical condition and was later declared brain dead. Despite his family's decision to donate his organs, Sean passed away the following day.
The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m., and police believe that Sean was
an unintended victim of a stray bullet fired during an attempted car theft across the street. The suspects, identified as 17-year-olds Daniel Gardee and Saahir Teagle, were involved in an attempted robbery at a nearby ATM and were seen trying to break into a woman's car before fleeing the scene. Gardee surrendered to police on June 22, 2022, while Teagle was taken into custody in Camden County, New Jersey, and later extradited to Philadelphia to face charges.
Both suspects were charged with murder, conspiracy, and other related charges. The investigation revealed that Gardee and Teagle were allegedly involved in multiple criminal activities on the night of Sean's death, including the attempted car theft and the ATM robbery. The case has drawn significant attention due to the tragic nature of Sean's death and the young age of the suspects involved.
The Toomey family has expressed their grief and frustration over the loss of Sean, who was described as a promising teenager who spent most of his time playing with his computer and phone. The family has also voiced their desire for justice and for the suspects to be held accountable for their actions.
The case remains under investigation, and the community continues to mourn the loss of a young life cut short by senseless violence.
