In the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, a night that began with the excitement of a 76ers playoff game ended in tragedy for 21-year-old Gregory Battle. It was April 18, 2022, and Battle, a Black male, was gathered with friends to watch the basketball game. He stepped out to pick up takeout food for the group.
Shortly after returning, as he stood outside the front door of the residence, an unknown assailant opened fire.
Battle was struck multiple times in a hail of at least 10 bullets fired at close range. The sudden violence shattered the evening, replacing cheers for the game with cries for help.
Responding officers found the gravely wounded young man and rushed him to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Gregory Battle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead that evening. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and at the time of the incident, no arrests had been made. The Philadelphia Police Department's investigation into the murder is ongoing, and they have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence.
