Shaquille Dixon, a 29-year-old man from Chester, PA, tragically lost his life on May 4, 2022. Dixon was shot inside the KNF Market on Third Street, Chester, around 10:15 a.m. According to the police affidavit, Dixon was found lying on the floor with a gunshot wound, and despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of 19-year-old Muhammad Z. McBride, who was identified as the shooter.
Witnesses and surveillance footage from the store showed McBride, wearing a red and black North Face jacket, pulling out a handgun and firing at Dixon while he was lying on the floor with his hands up. McBride turned himself in to the police the following day and was charged with criminal homicide, murder in the first and third degree, possessing an instrument of crime with intent, and firearms not to be carried without a license.
In November 2022, McBride entered a negotiated guilty plea to third-degree murder and possessing a firearm without a license. As part of the plea deal, the remaining charges were dismissed, and McBride was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in state prison in January 2024. During the sentencing, Dixon's sister gave a statement expressing the profound impact of her brother's death on her life and her struggle to forgive McBride.
McBride's defense counsel, William Davis, mentioned that McBride has been extremely remorseful and cooperative throughout the investigation. Davis also noted that McBride claimed to have been blacked out during the shooting, which was allegedly prompted by a belief that his mother had been threatened.
The case has drawn significant attention in Chester, with the community mourning the loss of Dixon and seeking justice for his untimely death. The legal proceedings have brought some closure to Dixon's family, although the pain of their loss remains profound.
