On a Tuesday morning, May 17, 2022, a 27-year-old Black/African American man named Giovanni Canales was shot and killed in Philadelphia. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the 1600 block of Margaret Street in the East Frankford neighborhood. Canales was inside a dark gray Nissan Rogue when he was shot six times, including twice in the head.
Responding Philadelphia Police officers discovered Canales lying in the street near the vehicle.
He was immediately transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:39 p.m. that day. Though police took two individuals in for questioning regarding the shooting, no arrests have been made in the case, and no weapons were recovered from the scene. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
Giovanni Canales, born on October 28, 1994, in Camden, New Jersey, had a life marked by both personal challenges and deep family connections. Though he had a history of drug-related charges and had spent time in prison, his family remembered him as a man with a 'soft heart' who loved them dearly. A father, he had his young son's name, Sakia, tattooed on his face. His last known address was on Brill Street in Frankford. A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his murder.
