Guard Homer Stone, aged 44, was a dedicated officer with the Stark County Sheriff's Office in Canton, Ohio. On May 21, 1902, he responded to gunshots coming from the brush and broom workshop at the Stark County Workhouse. Upon entering, he was met with gunfire from an inmate who had seized a guard's revolver and killed the foreman of the workshop. Guard Stone was shot in the arm and near his heart.
