Police Officer Richard Fickeisen, aged 57, tragically died on July 11, 1974, in Columbus, Ohio. He was a dedicated officer with the Columbus Division of Police, having served for 19 years. Officer Fickeisen succumbed to gunshot wounds he received 13 years earlier while serving a warrant at 413 N. Virginia Lee Road in Columbus. As he returned to his cruiser, the suspect ambushed him and shot him in the back, paralyzing him. When police arrived on the scene, the suspect fired at them from his apartment window, injuring several officers in the ensuing shootout. The suspect was arrested and charged with seven counts of aggravated murder.
Officer Fickeisen was survived by his wife, four daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren. His death was a significant loss to the community and the police force, and he is honored for his dedicated service and ultimate sacrifice.
