On October 21, 1981, Anthony Jerome Johnson, a 22-year-old African American male, was shot and killed while responding to a bank robbery in Cleveland, Ohio. Officer Johnson, who had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for less than a year, was fatally wounded when one of the suspects opened fire as he and his partner exited their patrol car. Despite returning fire and paralyzing the shooter, Officer Johnson succumbed to his injuries later that evening at Brentwood Hospital.
