On October 21, 1981, Anthony Jerome Johnson, a 22-year-old African American male, was shot and killed while responding to a bank robbery in Cleveland, Ohio. Officer Johnson, who had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for less than a year, was fatally wounded when one of the suspects opened fire as he and his partner exited their patrol car.
Despite returning fire and paralyzing the shooter, Officer Johnson succumbed to his injuries later that evening at Brentwood Hospital.
The suspects involved in the robbery were Leonard Jenkins and Lester Jordan. Jenkins, who was 27 years old at the time, was sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Johnson. However, his sentence was later commuted to life in prison without parole by the Ohio governor. Jenkins' accomplice, Jordan, who was 56 years old, was convicted of murder and robbery and also received a life sentence. Jordan died in prison in 1988.
The tragic death of Officer Johnson deeply affected his family and the community. He was survived by his wife Tracy, their young son Tony Jr., and numerous other family members.
