On January 24, 2023, 21-year-old Tysean Marquise James was fatally shot at the Quincy Gas Station located at 3939 Community College Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. when James was in the parking lot with a group of people. An unknown number of suspects began firing in their direction, striking James in the chest. Responding officers from the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority administered aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to MetroHealth
Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Cleveland Division of Police sought the public's assistance in identifying three persons of interest believed to be connected to the incident. Investigations revealed that these individuals had stolen a Kia earlier that day, which was subsequently used in the fatal shooting. The suspects were thought to frequent the Cedar Estates area. Despite releasing surveillance images and offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to their identification, no arrests have been reported in connection with James's death.
James's untimely passing was mourned by his family and the community. A viewing was held on February 15, 2023, at Watts-Upchurch Funeral Home, followed by services the next day. A GoFundMe campaign was also established to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting the family's grief over another senseless killing and the loss of a young Black life.
As of now, the case remains unsolved. Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward to aid in bringing those responsible to justice.
