Alcee Samuel McCray, a 58-year-old African American male, was a dedicated officer with the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department in Cleveland, Ohio. On October 14, 1989, Officer McCray was tragically shot and killed while on duty. He was confronted by an armed man in the Riverview Towers housing complex. The assailant had just disarmed Officer McCray using a starter pistol and was walking him out of the office when another officer entered.
The assailant then shot and killed Officer McCray and wounded the other officer before fleeing the scene.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Willis Wright, was apprehended shortly after the shooting by a canine officer. Wright was later found guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced to 38 years to life in prison. His first parole hearing is scheduled for July 2027. Officer McCray's name is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife and two children.
