On May 11, 1995, Anthony Hughes, a 39-year-old Black male from Akron, OH, was found lying at the bottom of the basement steps with several gunshot wounds. The Akron Police Department was immediately notified, and an investigation was launched to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Despite extensive efforts, the case remained unsolved for many years, and it was classified as an unsolved homicide.
In December 2020, three men—Jihada Aaron, Brian Cox Jr., and Deric
Thomas—were implicated in a series of violent crimes, including the death of Anthony Hughes. According to court documents, on December 9, 2020, Aaron and Cox Jr. fired multiple rounds at Hughes from a stolen vehicle, striking him multiple times. Hughes was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced deceased. The investigation revealed that the gun used in Hughes' murder was linked to Aaron, and DNA evidence and phone records further connected the individuals to the crime.
In December 2024, Jihada Aaron, now 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hughes' death. Brian Cox Jr., now 20, also pleaded guilty to the same charges. Deric Thomas, now 20, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and other related charges. Additionally, Allen Samuel Jr., who was driving the stolen vehicle during the incident, was indicted on charges including aggravated murder and multiple counts of felonious assault.
The case of Anthony Hughes highlights the tragic consequences of violent crime and the long-lasting impact on the victims' families and communities. The guilty pleas of the involved individuals bring some measure of justice, but the loss of a life at such a young age remains a somber reminder of the need for continued efforts to prevent such tragedies.
