On December 5, 1997, Daniel J. Pope, a 35-year-old Cincinnati Police officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Officer Pope, along with his partner, Police Specialist Ronald Jeter, was shot while attempting to serve a domestic violence warrant at an apartment on W. Hollister Street. The suspect, Alonzo Davenport, opened fire on the officers, shooting both in the head.
After killing the officers, Davenport fled the scene but later took his own life when cornered by responding officers.
The incident shook the Cincinnati community deeply. Officer Pope, a Cincinnati native and a member of a law enforcement family, had served with the Cincinnati Police Department for six years. He was remembered for his dedication and bravery, and his funeral was attended by more than 1,200 people. Officer Pope's death marked the last time Cincinnati police officers were fatally shot in the line of duty until 2000.
The case did not lead to any arrests or litigations, as the suspect committed suicide immediately following the killings. The tragic event highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the impact such losses have on their families and communities.
