On March 15, 2010, Officer Kerstetter responded to a call at a residence on 18th Street in Elyria. A mother had reported that a neighbor had exposed himself to her child and kicked in a window. When Officer Kerstetter and other officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, Ronald W. Palmer, opened fire on them. Officer Kerstetter was wounded in the exchange of gunfire and was transported to EMH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect, Ronald W. Palmer, was also shot and killed by the responding officers.
