Andrew J. Ittayem, a 17-year-old male of Arab ethnicity, tragically lost his life on October 6, 2010, in Columbus, Ohio. Andrew, affectionately known as "Drew," was a junior at Northland High School and was well-loved by both students and staff. He was known for his vibrant personality, often seen playing pee-wee football and boxing, and was the jokester of his family.
On the night of his death, Andrew was found around 11 p.m.
lying in the driveway of an apartment complex at 1953 Oakland Park Avenue, having been shot in the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was the result of a dispute Andrew had with Joeron McDonald, 21, and Darius Smith, 20, both of whom were charged with murder. Witnesses reported that the three men ran off shouting "Short North!" after the shooting, a reference to the University District gang, the Short North Posse.
The investigation led to the arrest of McDonald and Smith, who were found and taken into custody. Police also sought a third suspect involved in the dispute. The case highlighted the ongoing issues with gang violence and disputes in the area, as Andrew was not known to be involved with any gangs and was respected by his peers and community.
Andrew's death was the 82nd homicide of the year in Columbus, marking a somber milestone for the city. The community mourned the loss of a young life cut short by senseless violence, and his family and friends continue to remember him fondly.
