The circumstances surrounding Casey's death were the result of a violent home invasion. On the day of his death, Casey was targeted by Ronald B. Allen III and Gary L.
Rivers, who forcibly entered Casey's duplex on Salisbury Road with the intent to rob him. During the robbery, Casey's girlfriend, Dawn Bollinger, attempted to protect herself and their infant daughter by firing shots from behind a bedroom door. In the ensuing crossfire, Casey was fatally shot in the chest.
Ronald B. Allen III was later sentenced to 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a gun specification, attempted murder, and aggravated burglary. Gary L. Rivers received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 18 years after pleading guilty to murder with a gun specification. Melissa Hunt, who served as the driver for Rivers and Allen, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the crime.
