On January 24, 2021, 14-year-old Dayvion Jones was fatally shot on Hazelwood Road in Columbus, Ohio. Dayvion was walking home when he was confronted by a group of men in a stolen SUV. During the confrontation, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Dayvion, who was later rushed to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The suspects involved in Dayvion's death were identified as 19-year-old Aboubacar Toure and 18-year-old Sabab Islam.
Both were arrested in Detroit, Michigan, 16 days after the incident. They were charged with murder and robbery. A third suspect, 19-year-old Alhaj Sankoh, was later indicted for aggravated murder in connection with Dayvion's death.
Sabab Islam entered a guilty plea to charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery, and assault on a peace officer as part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to a minimum of 11½ years and a maximum of 16½ years in prison. Aboubacar Toure is awaiting trial, and Alhaj Sankoh is in custody with no trial date set yet.
Dayvion's death has deeply affected his family and the community, with his mother describing him as "everything to everybody that he touched." The investigation and legal proceedings continue as authorities work to bring justice for Dayvion.
