Jermani Brooks, a 5-year-old African American girl, tragically lost her life on January 19, 2014, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was shot in the head while sitting in an SUV with her mother, Noni Brooks, on Crossburn Avenue on Cleveland's west side. Noni Brooks, aged 33, was also shot in the head but survived and was upgraded to fair condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The suspect in this tragic incident is Geoffrey Gurkovich, a 32-year-old man with a criminal record.
Gurkovich was arrested the day after the shooting in Newburgh Heights. According to Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath, Gurkovich was the boyfriend of a 22-year-old woman who made a domestic-type report on the day of the shooting. In response to this complaint, Gurkovich went looking for the person involved and fired numerous rounds into the SUV, hitting Jermani and her mother. Chief McGrath stated that Jermani and her mother were not the intended targets and were "in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Gurkovich was charged with aggravated murder in connection with Jermani's death. A vigil was held in honor of Jermani on what would have been her sixth birthday, and a fund was set up in her name to support her family.
The case drew significant media attention and community support, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence on innocent lives. The community's response included a memorial on Crossburn Avenue and donations to the fund established in Jermani's name.
