Roderick Davis, a 26-year-old African American male from Columbus, OH, tragically died on May 5, 2014. Davis was shot in the backyard of a house on Pannell Avenue, where he had gone to confront someone about drug activity that his children were being exposed to. During the confrontation, a fight broke out between Davis and Anthony K. Gore Jr., which led to Gore shooting Davis twice.
The first shot struck Davis in the leg, and the second shot hit him in the head, resulting in his death.
Anthony K. Gore Jr., a 30-year-old man, was later arrested and charged with murder. However, Gore entered an Alford plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter with a gun, which means he maintained his innocence but acknowledged that there was enough evidence to convict him. In June 2015, Gore was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the shooting. During the sentencing, Davis' mother, Denise Ibaka, delivered an emotional statement, expressing her grief and asking for the maximum sentence.
The case highlighted the tragic consequences of violence and the impact it has on families and communities. Davis was remembered by his family and friends as a loving father and a dedicated member of his community.
