LeDon Shelton, a 42-year-old African American man from Cincinnati, OH, tragically lost his life on June 4, 2014. Shelton was fatally shot in the parking lot of Jack's Carry Out in Evanston after an attempted robbery. He was with his 20-year-old son when two individuals from an earlier argument in the store approached them at gunpoint. During the robbery, Robert McCallum, 24, shot Shelton in the chest when he did not cooperate.
The bullet severed Shelton's aorta, leading to his death.
Shelton's son was also targeted during the robbery, but fortunately, the shots fired at him missed. McCallum was arrested on June 10, 2014, after attempting to evade capture by jumping out of a window. Daniel Stallworth, 28, was arrested in Columbus on June 16, 2014, for his involvement in the crime. Both McCallum and Stallworth were indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault. Additional charges related to Shelton's death were also pending.
Shelton was well-known in his community as a barber at Staggs Barbershop in Avondale and as a youth football coach. His dedication to the community and his family was evident through his work and his role as a loving father. The Evanston community played a crucial role in identifying Shelton's shooters, leading to their arrests. Shelton's mother expressed gratitude to the community for their support and for helping bring justice for her son.
